Il est notoirement connu pour ses œuvres d'anticipations cyberpunks, tel que les univers de Ghost in the Shell et d'Appleseed, pour laquelle il obtient en 1986 le prix Seiun du meilleur manga, récompensant une œuvre de science fiction.
